Introduction JDesignerPro is a database wizard for Java. Use JDesignerPro to point & click your way to powerful applications that are instantly deployable. The screens you build with JDesignerPro are "databound" from the start. This way when you have completed a screen, it is ready to deploy. Visit BulletProof.com for extensive information about JDesignerPro, including features, product comparisons, pricing scale, and more. Note: You can download the latest version of JDesignerPro for FREE from http://www.bulletproof.com/JDesignerPro/download.htm. Because JDesignerPro works so closely with the database, there are a few items that need to be on the server with it. These are described below under Install Instructions. 2. Installation Instructions 1. Requirements * Windows95 or WindowsNT. * Microsoft Visual J++ installed. * A webserver such as Microsoft IIS or FrontPage Personal Server. * ODBC 2.5 or later. * An ODBC datasource where JDP can install it's system tables. See the TroubleShooting section for help with setting up a datasource if you are unfamiliar with ODBC or you do not have a database. 2. Installing JDesignerPro from the CDROM * You will initially be prompted to enter the IP address of your machine. The installer will search for this but if it cannot determine it a value of 'localhost' will be used for the default. If you know your IP address or machine domain name then enter it here otherwise leave the default value. * You will then be asked for the root directory of your webserver. In the case of MS IIS it will be something like \Inetsrv\wwwroot. In the case of Front Page Personal Server it will be something like \FrontPageWebs\content. NOTE: if you have the Personal server root directory in \FrontPage Webs\content you will need to re-install it into a directory path that has no space in it. In the case of Personal server be sure that you select the content directory. In the case of IIS be sure to select the wwwroot directory. * You will then be prompted for the cgi directory of your server. For IIS this will be something like \Inetsrv\scripts. For Personal Server it will be something like \FrontPageWebs\content\cgi-bin. NOTE: make sure that cgi has been activated for this directory from your webserver control panel. * You will then be prompted for the path to the Jview.exe program. JDP requires this so a menu option can be added to the tools menu of J++ to allow you to start JDesignerPro. The setup program searches for this file and should find it provided that you have installed Visual J++. * You will then be prompted for the path to the Jvc.exe program. JDP requires this it can automatically compile java source that it creates. The setup program searches for this file and should find it provided that you have installed Visual J++. * You will then be prompted for the path to the Classes.zip file. JDP requires this it can automatically compile java source that it creates. The setup program searches for this file and should find it provided that you have installed Visual J++. 3. Completing the installation and starting JDesignerPro for the first time * You may bring up the license agreement and setup window by either starting J++ and choosing the JDesignerPro option from the Tools menu or by starting MS Internet Explorer and going to http://localhost/JDesignerPro/default.htm * You will then see the license agreement window. After reading the agreement press the accept button. * Next you will see the setup window. Here you need to choose the admin account name and password that you will use to access you JDesignerPro system. * Choose the datasource where you would like JDesignerPro to install into by double-clicking on it in the list on the left hand side of the window. For more on configuring a datasource see below. * If you have chosen a datasource type such as SQL Server you will need to enter the database username and password in the space provided. Databases such as Access and FoxPro do not require a username and password. * If you have chosen and SQL Server datasource you will also need to enter the database name that you require JDP to install into. * Press the 'Install JDP' button. JDP will now create the 5 system tables in the datasource you have specified and load the 38 default records. * You will then be prompted with the login window. Simply press the OK button to log in with your new admin username and password. * Follow the instructions within JDP for more information on configuration and building Java interfaces to your own database. * The next time you start JDP from either J++ or IE you will be prompted with the login window. Enter your admin username and password or log in as Guest for limited access. 3. Support Please e-mail all support questions to support@bulletproof.com You'll find that BulletProof Corp responds quickly to your support questions. BulletProof wants to help you in every way possible and provide only the highest quality support. 4. Trouble Shooting If you are unfamiliar with ODBC or do not have a database do the following: 1. Setting up an ODBC Datasource 1. Open the ODBC control panel. 2. Press the System DSN button. 3. Press Add. 4. Choose the FoxPro entry and press OK. 5. Enter JDP for the name of your new datasource. 6. Leave the description blank. 7. Choose FoxPro2.6 and the type of datasource. 8. Press the browse button and locate the JDesignerPro directory under you web server root directory or some other directory where you would like the JDP system tables installed. 9. Press OK to save the new datasource. 10. You may now use this datasource in the JDP setup window. 2. Checking that the Jagg CGI is in place JDPJagg.exe must be in your webserver's CGI directory. Most servers have a directory called either CGI or CGI-BIN or Scripts in the case of Microsoft IIS Webserver. During the installation of JDesignerPro, this question will be asked. Simply point the installer at the CGI directory of the webserver. The installer will normally install JDPJagg in the correct directory. If you do not see a list of datasources in the list on the left hand side of the set up window then the CGI directory you specified at install time was incorrect. Enter the correct path and press Apply to bring up a list of your ODBC datasources. 3. Changing the installation directory We highly recommend leaving JDP in the directory in which it installs. You can load the applet from any HTML page simply by adding the tag above to your HTML page. If it is necessary to move JDP to another directory you will also have to make the appropriate changes to the JDesignerPro.ini file. 5. Deployment Once you have configured JDP and it has been successfully installed on your machine you may want to change the page that loads the applet. You can do this simply by adding the following applet tag to the bottom of an HTML page. where your would substitute localhost for either the IP address or the domain name of your machine. 6. Running JDesignerPro in a web page Other parameters that you can use in the applet tag are: Use this parameter to display the JDP application within the browser window. Be sure to adjust the width and height accordingly. We recommend 600x400. 7. Making JDesignerPro bypass the log in window Use these parameters to force JDP to automatically log in as the specified user. 8. Creating new JDesignerPro systems To create a new JDP System simply create a new HTML page with the applet tag shown below but change the value of JDPSystem to some other 5 character value. Load this new page from your browser to have JDP automatically configure a separate new JDP system. You may choose the existing datasource or a new one. 9. Re-installing JDesignerPro To remove JDP Systems or completely reinstall JDP you should remove any entries below the [JDesignerPro Systems] section of the JDesignerPro.ini file that resides in the JDesignerPro directory. 10. Using the JaggServer This release of JDP has a new version of the JaggServer. This is required if you wish to run JDP under Unix, but optional for MS-Windows. To tell a JDP client to use the JaggServer for Database access, you need to edit the file called JDesignerPro.ini. Find the line that says JAGGSERVER=CGI and change it to JAGGSERVER=Server. To use the JaggServer you will need JDBC from Javasoft allow with the JDBC-ODBC bridge for your server platform. You will also need the SQL API classes also available from Javasoft. 11. Starting the JaggServer To start the JaggServer, you need to use the following command: \java\bin\java -classpath \java\lib\classes.zip;\java\jdbc\classes;\wwwroot\JDesignerPro JaggServer. You can also substitute the /java/bin/java program for the Microsoft Jview.exe program. Obviously, you need to adjust the paths to suit your configurations. 12. Running JDesignerPro Using your java compatible web browser, load the default.htm page in the JdesignerPro directory. This will load the license agreement, and subsequently, the setup.
