The teeth of a helical gear are at a helix angle with respect to the axis of the gear. The axes of two meshed helical gears are parallel when these two gears have opposite hands. The yellow gear has the left hand helix, and the green gear has the right hand helix. 

Helical gears are quieter than spur gears in operation because of the gradual contact as the teeth come into mesh.
