• Java Server Pages

  Java Server Pages (JSPs) are an HTML extension for doing server-side scripting in your Web pages. Called from a browser just like HTML pages, they have special tags that let you insert Java logic directly into your Web pages.

  
  
• Java Servlets

  Java Servlets are Java programs that run on servers, providing a powerful evolution of earlier CGI programs. They are called like other Web pages or CGI programs (i.e., as a URL), but they have better performance and are much more portable.

  
  
• JavaBeans

  JavaBeans are the standard way of describing Java classes. JavaBeans have properties and methods that are described in very specific ways, so that even if you don't have the source code for a JavaBean, you can still find out what kind of data it stores and what its capabilities are.

Successful, rapid construction of Web applications requires tools that enable and integrate the combined efforts of several developer roles. For example, Web site producers use graphics and literary talents to structure the flow of Web sites, maintain a consistent look-and-feel, and ensure the user experience is a pleasant one. Java programmers bring added skills to create the business logic behind Web pages using constructs like Java Servlets, JSPs, and JavaBeans. Given this separation of skills, tools that support and enable divisions of labor along skill lines are invaluable.

IBM WebSphere Studio and IBM VisualAge for Java are just such tools. They are designed to be complementary so that the Web designers and the Java programmers can each focus on their appropriate tasks - yet combine their results in successful Web applications running on IBM WebSphere Application Server.

Web page designers can use WebSphere Studio to develop static HTML pages and JSPs -- working primarily in HTML -- and inserting references to JavaBeans that perform database access or business transactions. If your data source is a relational database, JavaBeans can be generated automatically by using WebSphere Studio wizards. If you are working with a transactional system like CICS or an ERP system like SAP, then JavaBeans can be rapidly constructed using VisualAge for Java. All the components can be managed by WebSphere Studio and published directly to IBM's WebSphere Application Server.

• IBM WebSphere Studio Entry Edition Version 3
