Taking your business to the Web means building appealing Web applications to attract customers and deliver qualities of service that represent the best your business has to offer. From a technical perspective, this involves creating Web applications that have several different, but complementary elements - typically consolidating the efforts of Web site designers, producers, and application programmers. Undoubtedly you're already familiar with HTML pages, images, and maybe even CGI programs and JavaScript. Some newer, more powerful Java technologies might be not be so familiar, but the ultimate success of your business and your competitiveness may depend on you using them effectively. These include: |
Java Server Pages (JSPs) are an HTML extension for doing server-side scripting in your Web pages. Called from a browser just like HTML pages, they have special tags that let you insert Java logic directly into your Web pages.
Java Servlets are Java programs that run on servers, providing a powerful evolution of earlier CGI programs. They are called like other Web pages or CGI programs (i.e., as a URL), but they have better performance and are much more portable.
JavaBeans are the standard way of describing Java classes. JavaBeans have properties and methods that are described in very specific ways, so that even if you don't have the source code for a JavaBean, you can still find out what kind of data it stores and what its capabilities are.
Successful, rapid construction of Web applications requires tools that enable and integrate the combined efforts of several developer roles. For example, Web site producers use graphics and literary talents to structure the flow of Web sites, maintain a consistent look-and-feel, and ensure the user experience is a pleasant one. Java programmers bring added skills to create the business logic behind Web pages using constructs like Java Servlets, JSPs, and JavaBeans. Given this separation of skills, tools that support and enable divisions of labor along skill lines are invaluable.
IBM WebSphere Studio and IBM VisualAge for Java are just such tools. They are designed to be complementary so that the Web designers and the Java programmers can each focus on their appropriate tasks - yet combine their results in successful Web applications running on IBM WebSphere Application Server.
Web page designers can use WebSphere Studio to develop static HTML pages and JSPs -- working primarily in HTML -- and inserting references to JavaBeans that perform database access or business transactions. If your data source is a relational database, JavaBeans can be generated automatically by using WebSphere Studio wizards. If you are working with a transactional system like CICS or an ERP system like SAP, then JavaBeans can be rapidly constructed using VisualAge for Java. All the components can be managed by WebSphere Studio and published directly to IBM's WebSphere Application Server.
The contents of this CD will allow you to see for yourself how easy, rapid, and integrated this process can be.
The IBM tools provided on this CD for you to develop a Web application are:
IBM(R) NetObjects TopPage helps you create dazzling Web pages in minutes. It features over 40 built-in templates -- or the option to start from scratch. With TopPage, you can type in text, drag-and-drop graphics, build frames, identify links and more. Over 2,000 graphics, images and sounds are available in the huge built-in library. Use TopPage to cut-and-paste documents, spreadsheets, tables and text into Web page designs. The latest Web technology can electrify each page: Cascading Style Sheets, Java applets, and Dynamic HTML. Exciting special effects and multimedia features enhance each page. A step-by-step tutorial on the basic TopPage functions is included.
IBM(R) WebSphere(TM) Studio Version 3.0 is the most complete, open and easy-to-use tool set for Web site authors and developers creating and deploying interactive e-business applications. Its best-of-breed tools let you easily import an existing HTML Web site and start adding in data-driven JSPs. WebSphere Studio accelerates Web page development with an industry-leading, easy-to-use visual page designer for JSPs, HTML and DHTML, provided through embedded TopPage technologies, and contains a powerful, integrated remote debugger for JSPs and Java. Key recent enhancements include newly integrated creation functions built into the WebSphere Studio workbench environment.
IBM(R) VisualAge(R) for Java(TM) is an award-winning, integrated development environment for creating Web-enabled enterprise applications. VisualAge for Java helps developers achieve exceptional productivity with advanced, easy-to-use functions that slash development time, enable a high-level of code reuse and allow for integrated team development.
And for executing your Web application on IBM's award-winning Web application server:
IBM(R) WebSphere(TM) Application Server Standard Edition Version 3.0 is a powerful, e-business, middleware tool that allows Web developers to build dynamic, secure Web environments. The Standard Edition combines the control and portability of server-side business applications and Extensible Markup Language (XML) with the performance and manageability of Java(TM)-based technologies and application programming interfaces (APIs). It integrates with and connects to enterprise applications and systems to enable powerful interactions with enterprise databases, transaction systems and e-business applications. It also extends the value and versatility of your Web server with functions such as a simple graphical user interface and extensive monitoring tools that allow you to watch your site's servlets and sessions with nearly realtime capability.
Finally, this CD also includes two tutorials to assist you in rapidly understanding and appreciating the power of the technology and integration included in these products. They are:
We recommend you use these tutorials as a good starting place from which you can then journey in ways most meaningful to your business and interests.
