Using the Find Unmatched Query Wizard

Use the Find Unmatched Query Wizard to create a query that shows records from one table that have no corresponding records in another table. This type of query is useful for finding employees who have no sales records or vendors who have no purchase orders.

To run the Find Unmatched Query Wizard:

  1. Start the Find Unmatched Query Wizard by clicking the New Object toolbar button arrow. Select Query. Click Find Unmatched Query Wizard, and click OK.
  2. First, select the table that includes the records you want to match. Click Next.
  3. Next, select the table that contains the related records. The query will return results from the first table that do NOT have corresponding records in this table. Click Next.
  4. Now, find the fields in the two tables that might contain matches. If there is an obvious field (fields with the same name in both tables or fields with an established relationship), Access will automatically suggest it. Click Next.
  5. Add additional fields that you want to include in the query results. Add the fields that will help identify how the field values are related. Click Next.
  6. Give the query a title, and click Finish to view the results.

When selecting the field(s) to search for unmatched values, remember that the fields might be named differently in the two tables. For example, the Product field in the Order table might contain the same values as the ProductOrdered field in the Inventory table.
To start the Find Unmatched Query Wizard:
  1. Click the New button in the Queries window. Click Find Unmatched Query Wizard. Click OK.
  2. Select Query from the Insert menu. Click Find Unmatched Query Wizard. Click OK.
