Graphics applications have many different uses, but they share some common tools and features. First, there is an image window or canvas that displays the image you're working on. A toolbox is a special toolbar with buttons that control the shape of the cursor, allowing you to draw using the mouse like a pen or brush. Color palettes allow you to select colors for lines and for filling graphic objects. Most graphic programs include at least a simple text editor so you can add text to your images. Finally, a good graphics program will allow you to save your work in a variety of formats.
