Intranets and Extranets
Intranets
- Allow access only from computers on the local network
- Use standard Web technologies
- Incorporate Web pages
- Are used to disseminate internal information in companies and educational institutions
Extranets- Allow certain outside computers to access the intranet
- Are used to link external customers or employees to the intranet
An intranet or extranet home page might look like a regular Web site, but only certain users have access to it. Intranets are used to provide internal communications. A company intranet home page might include links to health insurance information, corporate marketing plans, or expense reporting forms. Extranets are often used to facilitate communications with customers and suppliers. Through an extranet, customers can check inventory, request estimates, or check the status of orders. Extranets can also allow remote employees to connect to the company intranet.
