Oracle Tool Beats Sybase's PowerBuilder and Microsoft's Access in Contest to Develop "Shrink-wrap Quality" Application
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., June 5, 1995-Oracle Corp. today announced that it's Developer/2000 tool for client/server development won first place in the Midwest Oracle User Group's (MOUG) third annual developer's "shootout". The Developer/2000 team beat developers using tools from Powersoft, Microsoft, Cognos and Blyth Software in a five-day competition sponsored by the MOUG last month at its annual conference in Chicago.
The challenge was to create an integrated application to manage a youth soccer league. The application was to incorporate professional design techniques with an easy to use, intuitive user interface found in shrink-wrapped, consumer software packages. There were eight participating teams working with the following tools: two teams using Oracle's Developer/2000, three teams using Sybase's PowerBuilder, one team using Microsoft's Access, one team using Omnis7 from Blyth Software and one team using Axiant from Cognos. The second Developer/2000 team took third place in the competition.
The judging was comprised of two panels. The first was an expert panel of six developers who evaluated the accuracy and integrity of the application. These judges confirmed that the data extracted by the application was accurate and appropriate for the mission of the application and resourceful to the end-user.
The second phase of the judging was done by a group of 50 customers who evaluated the ease of use and caliber of the graphical intuitive interface. "This was our strongest showing of GUI products in any shootout we've had," said Richard Niemiec, president of the MOUG. "Oracle's Developer/2000 clearly came out on top."
The winning application leveraged Developer/2000's tight integration with Oracle's Designer/2000 for modeling of the application and automatic generation of portions of the code. The generated code can be reverse engineered back into Developer/2000 for tuning and customization. In addition, the application incorporated Developer/2000's second generation functionality that included embedded OLE2 objects, VBX controls and a help system implemented using Microsoft Help.
The application was designed to assist in the management of a youth soccer league. The Developer/2000-based application allows the end-user to automically assign players to teams, manage membership lists and fees, track scores and determine rankings. The system is available for free to soccer leagues throughout the United States. Interested parties should contact Richard Niemiec of the MOUG at (708) 960-2909.
Developer/2000 and Designer/2000 are Oracle's second generation client/server development tools which bring high-end programming features to Windows developers. Together, Developer/2000 and Designer/2000 offer the most integrated suite for all development, spanning rapid application development to high-end systems modeling.
