SINGAPORE MASS RAPID TRANSIT CORP. (MRTC) CHOOSES ORACLE'S DEVELOPER/2000

Oracle's Developer/2000 Outperforms Sybase's PowerBuilder in Competitive Evaluation

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., March, 27, 1995-Oracle Corp. announced today that Singapore's Mass Rapid Transit Corp. (MRTC) has selected Developer/2000, the company's recently announced flagship tool for application development, as the enterprise-wide standard for all new client/server systems development. The MRTC evaluated several client/server tools, including Sybase's PowerBuilder, before final selection of Oracle's Developer/2000.

"After having standardized on the premier parallel database for our systems [Oracle7 Release 7.1], we were challenged to find the ideal database development environment for our application developers," said Mr. Sam Kong San, manager of MRTC's Computer Services Department. "We examined a vast array of client/server tools. We needed a scalable development framework that could support anywhere from one to 1,000 users, with drag-and-drop distributed processing through application partitioning, and instant, useable, object-orientation. We get all of this with Developer/2000."

Singapore's MRTC-builder and owner of one the world's most modern and technologically advanced mass transit systems-will extend its leadership in service and technology by integrating Oracle's Developer/2000 into four strategic operational systems. These systems include construction in progress, contracts and cost control, executive information systems, and administration.

"Initially, we were considering several first generation client/server tools," said Ivy Sng, Systems Analyst with MRTC. "However, as we looked more closely, we realized that distributed client/server systems demand a far richer structural model. Developer/2000's tight integration with the database gave us key insights into the importance of the 'server' in 'client/server.' Even the simplest GUI applications perform a tremendous amount of distributed client and server processing. Knowing when, where, and how processing is partitioned enables me to productively build and tune successful client/server systems."

"Drag-and-drop application partitioning is a must-have for today's diverse and complex networked database systems," said Christopher Slade, vice president of marketing for Oracle Asia-Pacific. "MRTC evaluated Sybase's PowerBuilder in this competitive evaluation and selected Developer/2000 for its second generation functionality and scalability. This is the first of many wins for Oracle Developer/2000 in Asia-Pacific."

MRTC is the planner, builder, owner and regulator of the MRT rapid transit system in Singapore. The Singapore MRT Limited (SMRT), under license from MRTC, operates and maintains the Singapore MRT system. To sustain leadership as a premier provider of a world-class mass rapid transit system, MRTC is building a network infrastructure to migrate host-based applications to local area network and wide area network based client/server applications.

Oracle's Developer/2000 builds on the expertise of more than 300 Oracle engineers and 13 years of research and development. The product allows users to apply second generation functionality, like drag-and-drop application partitioning and full support for Microsoft's Object Linking and Embedding 2.0 (OLE2), in an easy-to-use, graphical environment. Applications built using Developer/2000 can be deployed in environments ranging in size from workgroups to several thousand concurrent users.

Developer/2000 is tightly integrated with Oracle's Designer/2000 modeling tool. The two products complement each other to deliver for the first time, second generation functionality and high-end programming features to Windows developers. Together, the products offer the most integrated suite for all development, spanning rapid application development to high-end systems modeling.
