ORACLE DEVELOPMENT TOOLS BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN CLIENT/SERVER AND CORPORATE INTRANETS

Designer/2000 for the Web Enables Transaction Processing Across Corporate Intranets Developer/2000 for the Web Introduces Rich and Flexible Dynamic Database Publishing Capabilities for the Enterprise

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., July 16, 1996-At today's Intranet strategy Day Oracle Corp. announced Designer/2000 for the Web and new features in Developer/2000 that equip corporations and organizations with the tools they need to carry huge investments in client/server systems and applications over to highly-flexible and less-expensive corporate intranets.

These new capabilities enable developers to easily create and maintain both client/server and intranet applications from the same tool set. This allows organizations to leverage existing investments and reduce systems costs by easing migration between client/server and intranet environments. Users can easily access and share information resources and perform online operations across intranets and the Internet using high performance applications coupled with a simple browser interface.

Designer/2000 for the Web enhances the popular WebServer Generator feature of Oracle's modeling and design tool and generates on-line transaction processing (OLTP) applications for corporate intranets and the Internet. Developer/2000, Oracle's second generation client/server development tool for the enterprise, dynamically creates and publishes high-fidelity database reports over internal and external Web-based networks.

"In looking to combine the strengths of client/server architecture with the simplicity and openness of the Internet, developers and information systems administrators want tools that protect and leverage existing skills and investments for building corporate intranets," said Sohaib Abbasi, senior vice president of Oracle's Tools and Groupware Division. "With strengths in portability, openness, application partitioning and rapid application development, Oracle tools are making intranet applications easy to create and maintain."

SCT Education Systems of Malvern, Penn. constructed an intranet system for universities with Oracle's client/server development tools. "Using Developer/2000 and Oracle WebServer, we have built applications that allow users to query database information over a distributed system from a simple browser interface," said Deborah Elias-Smith of SCT Education Systems. "Immensely popular, the BANNER? Web applications are our most successful products to date. The capability to run and publish reports and enable transactions on the Web will take our products-and users-in new directions."

Designer/2000 for the Web builds on Designer/2000's current data inquiry and information publishing capabilities to enable online transaction processing over corporate intranets. As a result, organizations can deploy applications to both client/server and Web-based users with no additional effort. Designer/2000 enables the migration of existing client/server applications to the Web by reverse engineering them into application models and then automatically regenerating them into fully-functional Internet and intranet applications.

When coupled with Oracle WebServer, Designer/2000 automatically generates code that enables end-users to perform run-time data query, insert, delete and update database operations from a simple browser interface. Oracle WebServer uses these generated procedures to translate between the browser and the database, relaying information to the browser in both Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and Javascript. Designer/2000 for the Web (Designer/2000 Release 1.3a) is scheduled for availability in the fourth quarter of this year. In addition, Designer/2000 supports a generation of Developer/2000, Visual Basic and C++, therefor, enterprises no longer need to select incompatible tools to build client/server and intranet applications.

Scheduled for availability later this summer, Developer/2000 Release 1.3.2 offers new capabilities that enable users to place and access database-driven reports on intranets and on the Internet. With no additional coding required, reports can be moved to the Web by simply specifying a Web output preference. This Web publishing functionality includes the ability to generate a table of contents, embed URL links to other Web sites and allows users to easily drill down to additional reports. Reports can be published in either HTML or Adobe's Portable Document Format (PDF), a flexible and high fidelity format. Included in the product and operating across Windows and Mac platforms, the Adobe Amber viewer plugs into Oracle PowerBrowser or Netscape Navigator and provides the user with an intuitive and versatile interface that includes a table of contents, hyperlinks, scalable fonts and URL types. A key benefit of Developer/2000's Web publishing capabilities is that no program executables need to be installed on desktops since live reports can be downloaded off of a server.

Oracle Tools With annual revenues of over $361 million, Oracle's application development tools are the market leader in client/server application development tools and are among the most robust, widely-used and fully functional environments in the world. Used by over half a million developers worldwide, Developer/2000 is the first client/server development tool to deliver workgroup-through-enterprise scalability and the only tool on the market that uses the same programming language on both the client and the server. Scalable deployment is a reality with Developer/2000 because of several core strengths found in the product, including drag-and-drop application partitioning. Designer/2000 is Oracle's modeling tool for client/server development, incorporating support for system analysis, software design, automatic code generation and business process re-engineering. In Computerworld's I/S User Brand Preference survey for application development tools conducted in May 1996, Oracle's Developer/2000 and Designer/2000 won top honors in their respective categories. Developer/2000 topped four of seven categories, including best technology, best service and support, best documentation, and best tool vendor with which to do business. Designer/2000 topped all seven, including those listed above, plus best price/performance, best documentation, most installed, and most likely to purchase.
