REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., Oct. 7, 1996--Reaffirming and increasing openness in the application development tools market, Oracle Corp. today announced that the beta release of Oracle Developer/2000 Release 2.0 will offer developers a completely new and open application programming interface (API), significantly enhancing the product's ability to work with third party products.
This API, along with one for Oracle Power Objects Release 2.0, are part of Oracle's newly announced Open Tools Initiative (OTI) program. The OTI program links developers more closely to independent software vendor (ISV) products that extend the functionality of applications built with Oracle's Developer/2000 and Designer/2000, Oracle Power Objects and Oracle InterOffice.
All of Oracle's tools utilize open standards and have published application programming interfaces (APIs) that invite ISVs to integrate their technologies into Oracle's development environments. Together, Oracle tools and OTI partners offer developers a full set of application development tools with unprecedented power and flexibility.
These new APIs and OTI open up Oracle tools and markets to complementary tool vendors. In addition, OTI offers technical and marketing incentives to members, and gives developers easier access to products and services that integrate tightly with Oracle tools and collaboration software. OTI also introduces a compelling joint marketing program that pair OTI members' product information with Oracle tools both "in the box" and on the Internet.
"It's great for developers, for participating ISVs and for Oracle," said Sohaib Abbasi, senior vice president of Oracle's Tools and Groupware Division. "The APIs and this initiative open up Oracle development tools to complementary ISV's products, making powerful interfaces to the more than half a million users of Oracle tools worldwide."
Developers welcome the opportunity to participate in the OTI program to work more closely with independent software vendor (ISV) products that extend the functionality of Oracle's tools and collaboration software.
NCR's TOP END provides Developer/2000 front-ends with existing transactional middleware based applications for greater scalability and availability. "NCR's TOP END is the leader in TP Monitors, so it makes great sense for us to integrate our transaction processing functionality with Oracle's leading Developer/2000 products," said Mike Denny, vice president of Product Marketing at NCR. "With Oracle's open design and open interfaces, end-users and developers can take advantage of TOP END's functionality from within their familiar development environment."
"Improving development productivity as development cycles compress is a critical business issue," said John Cimral, INTERSOLV vice president and general manager of PVCS. "By enabling us to integrate the functionality of the leading software configuration management solution, PVCS, with Oracle Developer/2000, Oracle offers customers a truly comprehensive solution for effectively managing application development. The open interfaces provided by Developer/2000 and PVCS give end users seamless version management capabilities to use as they build applications."
"Pure Atria's PurePerformix ensures that the deployment hardware meets the application's requirements, and maintains scalability even with changes to the application," said Jeff Straathof, general manager at Pure Atria. "The combination of Developer/2000 and PurePerformix allows users to build enterprise capable applications, thanks to Developer/2000's open interfaces and our work with Oracle to achieve tight integration."
What Products are Available?
Oracle's APIs and OTI bring a wide array of products and services directly to
Oracle developers, including:
What are the Advantages of Membership?
Membership in OTI paves the way toward a collaborative and mutually beneficial
relationship with Oracle Corp. There are over 60 members currently in OTI,
which replaces the previous Open/2000 program. Participants enjoy tight
integration of their product with Oracle tools technology through published
APIs, pre-production access to future releases of Oracle tools, and monthly
newsletters with product and event information before it becomes news, giving
recipients a headstart in developing their business plans and products.
Marketing is advanced through an active listing of OTI member companies,
products and services on the OTI Partners' Web site and the inclusion of
marketing material and selected vendors' product demonstration versions in
Oracle tools' product packages. OTI is open to companies that develop and
market products that interface with and extend the functionality of Oracle
tools to provide end-users with more complete and powerful solutions.
Membership in Oracle's Business Alliance Programme is a pre-requisite for OTI membership. For more information, visit the Oracle Alliance Web site at http://alliance.oracle.com/.
Oracle's application development tools are used by over half a million developers worldwide. Developer/2000 sets new ease-of-use and productivity standards for client/server and Web development tools through the use of RAD techniques, object orientation, a unified client and server architecture, and effortless deployment on the Web. Developer/2000 is the first client/server development tool to deliver workgroup-through-enterprise scalability, achieved through breakthrough technology such as drag-and-drop application partitioning and extensive database integration. Tightly integrated with Developer/2000, Designer/2000 is Oracle's modeling tool for client/server development, incorporating support for system analysis, software design, automatic code generation and business process re-engineering. Using its WebServer Generator, Designer/2000 automatically creates fully-functional OLTP Web applications that run over the Oracle WebServer.
Developer/2000 proved to be the most popular tool in Computerworld's I/S User Brand Preference survey for application development tools conducted in May 1996. Oracle's Developer/2000 placed first in four out of seven 4GL categories, while Designer/2000, Oracle's analysis, modeling and design tool, swept all seven CASE categories.
Oracle Power Objects, Oracle's visual development tool for BASIC developers building mobile, client/server and intranet applications, combines strong database integration with established industry standards such as BASIC and OLE, new techniques including visual object orientation, Netscape's Plug-in architecture for intranet-enabled applications and drag-and-drop metaphors for ease of use.
The collaborative services of Oracle InterOffice enable the effective enterprise by giving people in the workplace immediate access to information from a variety of sources. With an open, modular architecture that suits every and any work environment, InterOffice serves as the backbone of modern work processes.
