ORACLE FIRST TO OFFER FAMILY OF DATABASE-SMART INTRANET/INTERNET DEVELOPMENT TOOLS

Customers Leverage Client/Server Development Investment to Easily Deploy Applications in Corporate Intranet and Public Internet Environments

AMSTERDAM/SAN FRANCISCO, April 15, 1996-Oracle Corp. today outlined its strategy for extending the advanced functionality of its leading application development tools to corporate Intranet and public Internet developers. Oracle's development tools product line consists of Oracle Power Objects, Developer/2000, Designer/2000, and the new Oracle PowerBrowser. Together these products address the complete life cycle of corporate Intranet development. This announcement was made internationally today at the European Oracle User Group in Amsterdam and DB EXPO in San Francisco.

Oracle's complete line of development tools span the needs of developers building systems for deployment to small workgroups through the enterprise. In addition, Oracle's tools offer end-to-end integration and the ability to leverage the functionality of Oracle Universal Server, the most scalable, widely used database among Fortune 1000 companies. From a development side, Oracle's tools offer second generation features including an object-oriented development environment, drag-and-drop application partitioning, automatic code generation and the ability to easily publish dynamic database information.

"Only Oracle has demonstrated leadership in delivering Intranet and Internet developers the tools they need to deliver database-smart applications," said Sohaib Abbasi, Oracle's senior vice president of development tools. "These new tools combined with Oracle's new WebServer 2.0 and Oracle Universal Server make Oracle the right choice for serious application development for any deployment environment."

Oracle's PowerBrowser has all of the features of Netscape's Navigator and Microsoft's Explorer, including Java, Javascript, and Basic, plus advanced tools for database developers to tightly link their Intranet and Internet applications with relational databases. Oracle Power Browser is the first browser to feature a personal HTTP server, ODBC access, and Personal Oracle Lite--a personal database for storing information locally on a personal computer. Leveraging the easy-to-use development environment in PowerBrowser, an individual can retrieve dynamic, real-time information from anywhere within the enterprise, analyze and customize the data and then publish it from the personal HTTP server inside Power Browser. This data can then be accessed by anyone throughout the organization by simply entering the URL from within the browser. Because PowerBrowser comes with a personal desktop database, the creator of the web page can build and deploy a complete application right from the desktop.

"Our new family of Internet and Intranet tools offer developers the productivity, scalability, and integration they need to build the next generation of applications," said Marc Benioff, senior vice president of Oracle's Web/Workgroup Division. "Only Oracle can deliver easy to use tools from the workgroup to the enterprise, from the Internet to the Intranet, all integrated with our leading database systems. No other vendor has demonstrated the completeness of Oracle's approach to database-smart Internet and Intranet application development."

In a related announcement Oracle today introduced the Designer/2000 WebServer Generator allowing developers to automatically generate HTML Web pages for the modeling and generation of Web applications. With the new WebServer Generator in Designer/2000, customers can easily deploy applications to either a client/server or Intranet environment thereby fully leveraging the power of the web and reducing deployment costs. This provides an easy migration and coexistence path for client/server systems and corporate Intranet environments.

Designer/2000 tightly integrates with Developer/2000, Oracle's tool for departmental and enterprise scale applications. By leveraging its tight integration with Oracle Universal Server, Developer/2000 will support the creation of dynamic, highly graphical Web-based reports, charts and diagrams. For the first time, end users can call data stored in a database and receive the most current, accurate information and reports in real time, without leaving the browser environment. Users can then drill down into the report to view supporting charts and diagrams that analyze the data in greater detail, still without ever leaving the browser window.

Oracle Power Objects, Oracle's workgroup application development tool, will extend its capabilities to embrace the new generation of workgroups who want their client/server applications to be accessed via a corporate Intranet. Existing Power Objects applications will be able to be stored on a Web server and run through any Web browser which supports the Netscape Inline Plug-In architecture. Customers who have invested in developing client/server solutions using Power Objects will now be able to leverage their investment and use one tool to develop client/server or Web-based solutions.
