Upgrading Existing Forms Applications to Developer/2000

This paper addresses the issues involved in upgrading existing applications built using previous versions of SQL*Forms and Oracle Forms to Developer/2000. It highlights the differences between the character-mode and bitmapped environments, and presents various upgrade options that you can consider. We have also made some suggestions on how you can exploit the new Forms 4.5 features in your applications to improve user productivity, ease maintenance, partition your applications and integrate with other products. The specific versions of forms and menus covered in this paper are shown in the diagram below. There are various options when upgrading your applications. Before you even start thinking about the technical issues, you need to make a decision to the following question. Do you want to: keep running your character-mode application in a character-mode environment, or run your character-mode application in a bitmapped environment, or move your character-mode application to a GUI application running in a bitmapped environment? [--- WMF Graphic Goes Here ---] As each application is unique in its own way, the goal of this paper is to help you be more aware of the issues involved and plan your upgrade process.
