You can filter the content you want to be able to see using Internet Explorer’s Content Advisor feature. Using this feature, you can attempt to restrict Internet resources that include violence, nudity, sex, or profane language. You can also create a password to prevent others from changing your content restrictions or to override your content restrictions.
To use Internet Explorer’s Content Advisor feature, choose Tools | Internet Options and click the Content tab. If you’ve never used this feature before, click the Enable button. If you’ve previously set up this feature, click the Settings button and enter the password you provided. Internet Explorer displays the Ratings tab as shown in Figure 23-15.
To set content restrictions, follow these steps:
1. Select a category from the list.
2. Drag the slider to the left for more protection or to the right for less. The Description box explains what type of content you’re allowed to see on the level selected.
3. Click the General tab and specify whether you want to be able to view unrated sites or to enter a password to override the restriction of a web page.
4. Click the Approved Sites tab to add sites that you want to be able to view regardless of their rating.
5. Click OK.
TIP: There are many shortcomings of Internet Explorer’s Content Advisor, so don’t count on it as the fix-all solution. At this time, the Content Advisor’s main problem is that most sites aren’t rated. This means that if you block unrated sites, you block access to the vast majority of the web (including the majority of valuable and reputable sites). Likewise, if you allow access to unrated sites, you allow access to almost all of the objectionable and offensive material on the web.
